I researched the benefits of walking (amongst other topics) on WebMD today, since I’ve been walking regularly in the warm weather now. Walking is generally a big part of my life. I find it to be meditative (some past breakups I’ve had have resulted in long walks) especially with music* and running into the people I do when is always interesting. Anyway, WebMD says walking is beneficial to immunity (tests show it may be related to warding off breast cancer). Also:

It supports weight loss and weight maintenance.

It reduces the risk of heart disease and stroke.

It fends off diabetes by improving the body’s ability to use insulin.

It eases the pain and stiffness of arthritis.

It keeps bones strong, which prevents osteoporosis.

In women, it relieves premenstrual and menopausal discomforts.

It improves sleep.

It builds strength, flexibility, and stamina.

It enhances mental function.

It counteracts anger, depression, and anxietySo walk more, bitches.

*Another thing I like about walking so often is that it’s a good setting for music. If I didn’t have a fancy Tinkerbell mp3 player half the times I’ve had to walk long distances through eerie shrubbery I’d have probably tried to find rides. The dark scares me enough. Silent darkness is worse. Walking on Halloween gives me a venue for the Halloween playlist, though, and I prefer to be scared when I do so. Sunny-sounding acoustic guitars and smooth voices or Tom Waits and dirty piano pairs well with the sun setting here. As you can see, I relate music to a lot of things, especially settings. It’s an aesthetic thing.

I didn’t go to school today. Again. Instead, I stayed home and read Married to the Sea and downloaded devil music. Literally. I went to the Church of Satan’s online store and sampled some of the bands they sold there. I could hardly find any, so I downloaded tidbits of an album that Anton LaVey recorded. Pretty apparent that he made an impression on Marilyn Manson’s earliest post-Spooky Kids stuff, i.e. freaky synthesizer use and elements of circus soundtrack. I’d gotten about 150 songs worth of spring/summer music which is mostly Grateful Dead and Doobie Brothers and Rancid and Little Feat and Kimya Dawson and crap, but today I’d been Wikipediaing Satan and I was in the mood for fitting music.

I just found an ancient can of Nestea in my basement. Has to be at least 3 years old. Mmm.

One of my things is to make playlists. For the past few years, I’ve made seasonal playlists which reflect the moods that come to mind in relation to whichever season it is. I also make mood or setting playlists (I’m sounding increasingly cooler, no?) but the seasonal ones are always my favorite. I make a Winter playlist, a Halloween playlist, a Spring/Summer playlist. My playlists for 2008 and 2007 were deleted by Matt because he’s a selfish fucktard iTunes hog (my angry playlist, my happy playlist, my playlist for driving a tank, etc.) Oh well. Anyway, this rambling’s going nowhere. My Spring playlist will probably have parts recycled to make Summer, so suck it!

Spring 2008

The Comas – Tonight on the WB

Little Feat – Weed, Whites and Wine

Led Zeppelin – Ramble On

Grateful Dead – Sugaree

The Doobie Brothers – Black Water

Yaël Naïm – New Soul

Mirah – Murphy Bed

Mirah – Million Miles

Sugarcoma – Crazy

the Rolling Stones – Get Off My Cloud

the Rolling Stones – Wild Horses

Grateful Dead – Not Fade Away

the Beatles – She Came in Through the Bathroom Window

State Radio – Keepsake

Kimya Dawson – Loose Lips

NRBQ – Wacky Tobacky

Bic Runga – Sway

Allman Brothers Band – Midnight Rider

Regina Spektor – Ghost of Corporate Future

Pure Prairie League – Amie (Falling In and Out of Love)

Rancid – Bob

Patti Smith – Hey Joe

Donovan – Atlantis

the Beta Band – Dry the Rain

the Polyphonic Spree – Section 9: Light and Day

Hole – Malibu

Crack Rock Steady

Helium – Ocean of Wine

Jane’s Addiction – Jane Says

Cat Stevens – The Wind

Incubus – Are You In?

There. That’s an awful lot. It’s actually an 80+ song playlist, but you get the idea. Now, because I don’t use CDs much anymore, I stuff playlists with as many songs fit their theme.

It’s about damn time the sun came out.
